This is so timely for me. I am saving up for a Harvest Right freeze dryer. My sister already has one and loves it but she's too far away to make sharing a viable option. I am thinking that more freeze drying might let me eliminate at least one of my freezers - cutting down on long term energy costs to store food. And the ability to turn food waste into shelf stable dog food makes a world of sense to me too. Thanks for sharing this post!

I've been experimenting with the "meal in a jar" concept, so that I can store a one-pan meal in mason jars for quick meals at home, or in mylar bags to take camping. I find it much easier to cook an entire recipe and then freeze-dry it, but I've also experimented with recipes where each ingredient is freeze-dried before adding it to the jar or mylar. I'd love to hear what has worked for you... meatloaf is something I have not yet tried.

Hi Ashley…

I really want a Harvest Right Freeze-Dryer!! :)

What can you tell me about freeze-drying raw milk..? I have a friend that said freeze-drying milk destroys the fat/cholesterol content in the milk. What do you think..? Also, I am intrigued with making Protein Powder. How do you do that to get a higher/more concentrated protein value..?

My stepmom just started freeze drying so I’ll definitely be sharing this with her. Great tips!

Have you tried freeze drying heirloom seeds from the garden and checking the germination rates?

This could NOT have arrived at a better time! I just completed my test run of bread in my brand new Harvest Right freeze dryer, and I'm quite impatiently waiting for a papaya to reach perfection before I load up the trays with fresh organic fruit! Thank you for the great information!

I would love to have a freeze dryer but can only put it in a place that freezes. I don’t think that works - do you know?

Ashley, I love your posts!

Can you freeze dry Kiefer grains that will reconstitute? My husband and I like to travel. This past winter I luckily had froze some Kiefer grains, as I lost my current batch that was resting in the frig. It took about 2 weeks to bring back the frozen grains to health. Although it worked I’d like to not go through that again.

We freeze dry the herbs. The mints keep their potency best this way.

Hi Ashley! As always, in awe and grateful for your words. What other freeze dryers are out there and worth the $$$? Have you been able to compare? And what about fixing them if broken (I know someone in that boat, don’t know the brand), which ones can you easily find parts for?
