I’m moving from zone 7b to zone 5a in two weeks, so this information is incredibly timely for me! Thank you for gathering this together.

Here in the southern hemisphere I'm eagerly awaiting the lemons that are just starting to ripen. Lemon curd is calling to me :)

RE: "100+ Heirloom Apples to Try before You Die ~ Most of these you can only taste if you grow them yourself, and now’s the time to plant!

How to Grow Apple Trees from Seed ~ Every named variety was once just a chance seedling."

I aim to increase that list of heirloom apples by a few more before I leave this Earth ;)

Check out this batch of 2024 second generation malus sieversii seedlings I have going in the basement:

I have high hopes for the purple leafed ones to provide some purple skinned or perhaps even purple fleshed fruit! :)

Thank you for all the work you put into provide good quality information! Your news letters are always packed full of everything I would love to know about. I live at over 8000 feet in the Colorado Rockies. I always wanted to grow kiwi but was waiting until I have a year round greenhouse. Now with the info you provided I am going to jump in now :)

Ashley, this is off topic, but re your 2017 post re Linden trees which is very good. Here in Portland OR many many streets are planted with Linden, and mine, and I even cut one down and made sauna benches from the aged lovely golden colored wood. Sauna benches need to be softwoods, or they would get too hot. I let it regrow (copicced it is the term I have heard used) and now its all regrown, with the caveat it does fall over more readily when coppiced, so the city has rules re that and if it were removed again they would entirely remove it. But coppicing does work fine if you dont park your car there, it for street trees. There were 2 Lindens here when I moved in in 90's and the elder one is still intact, but more than 6 trunks and spreading dangerously soon. Many harvestable straight segments at 18" or more or so. I would love to get it carefully cut down at lengths and sawmill it, it makes great sculpture and hobbywood and is in the balsawood families of hardness. A chunk of basswood that you might find in a beginning sculpture class. Carves like butter.

When I first moved here I saw an old woman, literally wearing a headscarf and told me how she was gathering the flowers for her sick husband. I felt lucky to see that.

best -jackie
